Frequently Asked Questions
Who operates CrimeStoppers?
CrimeStoppers is not the police. We are private citizens, law enforcement and local media, working together to prevent and solve crimes. To do this, we rely on tips from people like you. A Board of Directors oversees the daily operations of the program, including the rewards program. The Board of Directors does NOT possess any personal information about individuals who provide information to CrimeStoppers.
How does CrimeStoppers work?
When you call 875-TIPS (8477), you are given the opportunity to share information about a crime. At the end of the call, you will be assigned a special code number. This code number is how you identify yourself when you communicate with CrimeStoppers. Calls are never traced or recorded, and you will not be required to testify. CrimeStoppers does not ask for—and does not know— a caller’s identity. You remain 100% anonymous.
Who qualifies for a reward?
If your tip to CrimeStoppers leads to an arrest involving a felony crime, then you receive a cash reward. Reward amounts range from $150 to $2,000, depending upon the nature of the crime and the significance of the information you provide. Rewards are distributed via code number at a prearranged location. The police will not be involved. Your identity will never be known or revealed.
Who funds CrimeStoppers?
CrimeStoppers is a non-profit organization, funded solely by private, tax-deductible donations. Donors include local businesses, corporations, clubs, associations, and individuals. No local, state, or federal tax monies are used. If you would like to make a donation, please mail your tax-deductible contribution, along with your name and address to: CrimeStoppers P.O. Box 319 Columbia, MO 65205
How does CrimeStoppers work with the media?
CrimeStoppers relies on the support of local media outlets. By donating production, air-time and ad space, they enable CrimeStoppers to relay important messages to the community. This support, provided as a public service, and free of charge, has a direct impact on the fight against crime in Mid-Missouri.
